Returns across DK, SE, NO, DE — one Shopify store, four sets of rules

Updated August 2026

Selling to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany from one Shopify store means one catalogue — and four different returns realities. Carrier, cost, currency and customs all change at the border.

Try it yourself

Nexly resolves country from the Shopify shipping address and applies that market's rules before the customer sees a single option.

What actually differs

The EU floor is the same. Everything operational is not.

  • Carrier and product: your DK parcel-shop product does not exist in the same shape in DE.
  • Cost: a prepaid Norwegian return can cost several times a domestic Danish one.
  • Customs: Norway is outside the EU customs union, so returns need documentation.
  • Currency: the refund and any exchange upcharge must be in the currency paid.
  • Language: German customers read German instructions, or they email support.

A rule set per market

The right model is not 'one global policy' — it is per-country configuration with a shared default.

  • DK/SE: prepaid label, fee optional, parcel shop as standard.
  • DE: prepaid label, statutory minimum window, German-language instructions.
  • NO: customer-paid or prepaid with customs handling — often manual instructions plus a tracking field.
  • Rest of EU: manual return instructions with your return address and reference.

When you do not pay for returns

Nexly does not simply hide the option. The customer gets your written instructions, the return address, the reference to write on the parcel, packing guidance — and an optional field for their own carrier and tracking number. The submission is timestamped and the return appears in your dashboard as pending, so nothing arrives at the warehouse unannounced.

Exchanges are the cross-border win

On expensive lanes, an exchange is dramatically better than a refund: you keep the revenue and pay for one outbound parcel rather than losing the order and the original shipping. That is why the portal always shows sizes and alternatives first, with live availability and correct local pricing.
